If an intoxicated man is reckless enough to threaten innocent people with a knife, causing one resident to flag down passing officers for help, it should come as no surprise that he may do something as irrational as turn on the uniformed bicycle officers with that knife in an attempt to kill them.
Likewise, any person, whether or not they speak English, or who has had too much to drink, should understand that threatening officers with a knife will result in a swift and appropriate response by police, and if necessary, it will include the use of deadly force. It was precisely that combination of behavior on the part of Manuel Jamines on September 5 that precipitated his death.

Various community “activists,” including the Revolutionary Communist Party, are attempting to gin this shooting up into a controversy, agitating a small handful of others to conduct “protests” of this shooting. The pathetic attempt to excuse the armed advance on the responding officers by claiming the man “did not speak English” only highlights the inanity of the “protest.” For the record, the officers gave him commands in English and Spanish, not that it matters because getting drunk and threatening bystanders and then LAPD officers with a knife is dangerous and self-destructive in any language.
This was not and should not be a controversial shooting. Certainly this was a tragic incident and undoubtedly uncomfortable for people in the area to witness, but police work isn’t pretty. Police officers don’t get paid to get stabbed, nor do we possess magical powers or weapons that allow the seamless disarming of armed and dangerous individuals. When an individual, armed with a deadly weapon, makes a decision (however poor that decision is) to advance on police officers, then that individual is solely responsible for whatever the consequences may be.
Along with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, detectives examined other items found with the infants inside the steamer trunk, which was marked with the initials J.M.B. Materials in the trunk included two letters and several Christmas cards addressed to a Jean M. Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department detectives continue their death investigation of a mysterious case involving the discovery of two long-deceased small infants found in a storage trunk last month when residents of an apartment building were cleaning out a community basement filled with property.

Along with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, detectives examined other items found with the infants inside the steamer trunk, which was marked with the initials J.M.B. Materials in the trunk included two letters and several Christmas cards addressed to a Jean M. Barrie. One letter, addressed to a Janet M. Barrie, was apparently from a Thomas M. Barrie in San Francisco who identified himself in the letter as Ms. Barrie’s brother. A second letter addressed to Janet M. Barrie was sent by another family member from Canada. The correspondences to both Jean M. Barrie and Janet M. Barrie were sent to the same address. Other correspondence from family members addressed to Jean M. Barrie referenced a “Janet” within the body of the letters. Using official Scottish documents and U.S. Immigration records, detectives were able to confirm that Janet Mann Barrie and Jean M. Barrie were the same person. Barrie was born on Jan. 15, 1897, and records indicate she emigrated to the U.S. from Scotland during the mid-1920s.

To help detectives and personnel from the coroner’s office determine Barrie’s connection to the trunk’s contents, investigators used photos and negatives from the trunk that depicted a white female wearing items of clothing that were also discovered inside the trunk, such as a purse and white fox boa.

Also included in the investigation was a search for death, marriage and birth certificates. During the search, detectives discovered Barrie’s 1964 marriage to George Guy Knapp in Los Angeles after the death of his first wife, identified as Mary Downs Knapp. Up to that time, Barrie had apparently been a homecare nurse for Mrs. Knapp since 1941. Barrie’s marriage to Knapp lasted only four years due to his death in 1968, and she eventually left Los Angeles in the 1980s. Several years later, she died in Canada where family members have been contacted in Canada.

Coroners have performed autopsies of the infants’ remains with the assistance of an anthropologist. Both decedents were found to be full-term infants, one of which was a female. The sex of the second infant has not yet been established. Thus far, trauma doesn’t appear to be a factor in either infant’s death. For now, the causes of death are classified as undetermined, and the case remains open pending DNA and toxicology results for both infants.

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact LAPD Juvenile Division detectives at 1-877-LAPD-24-7. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous should call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477). Tipsters may also contact Crimestoppers by texting to phone number 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone. All text messages should begin with the letters “LAPD.” Tipsters may also go to LAPDOnline.org, click on "webtips" and follow the prompts.

*At least 8 DUI checkpoints this holiday weekend in L.A.*

Like every weekend, the LAPD will be holding DUI checkpoints around the city. But unlike other weekends, this three-day holiday one is going to see a more scrutinized focus because officials always see an uptick in drunk driving. And so Friday through Monday, expect to see more police out on the streets. Today the LAPD announced eight checkpoints, which cover the city from the Valley to the Harbor, form Echo Park to Venice. There also could be more out there because the LAPD doesn't have to announce locations.

It's understandable if LAPD officers citywide are humming, "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." That's because at the Eagle & Badge Gala on Saturday, August 21, LA Dodgers owner Frank McCourt promised complimentary game tickets for LAPD officers and their families. A man of his word, McCourt delivered 10,000 vouchers to the LAPPL last week - each one good for four free tickets to a game on September 17, 18 and 19 or October 1, 2 and 3. The complimentary tickets represent a very generous, morale-boosting gesture from Mr. McCourt, one of three civic leaders honored at the Gala for outstanding community service.

*Hundreds ride to support fallen officers*

With a deafening rumble, hundreds of riders kicked off a polished chrome and leather boot parade on wheels Saturday to raise thousands of dollars for fallen police officers. Freeways and streets around the Valley, Malibu and Hollywood were temporarily shut down and traffic backed up as the 3rd annual West Valley Memorial Ride roared through to raise money to honor fallen Los Angeles officers and support their families. About 500 motorcycles initially formed a 7-mile long procession escorted by police, although some reports indicated that hundreds more joined in spontaneously along the 56-mile route.

*LAPD officers work at cafe for charity*
Los Angeles police were writing a lot of tickets Friday, but it's not what you think. Officers spent the day at Mimi's café in Los Feliz taking orders and serving drinks. It was the department's annual Tips-for-Tots fundraiser. Police were raising money for their Cops-for-Tots charitable organization. The fundraiser benefits Children's Hospital Los Angeles, particularly the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. Officers will also be having a car show fundraiser Oct. 24 at the Los Angeles Police Academy.
