News Update:
On September 30, 2008, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed bill AB 2270. In his statement, the Governor said that it would "create a system that could unduly limit choices for consumers and small water systems, with potentially little positive impact given the relatively limited contribution of water softeners to our salinity problems."
AB 2270 would have unfairly banned water softeners and allowed the government to intrude into private residences to remove private property. Further, the legislation would have lead to poor water quality as well as higher energy costs.
We are grateful that Governor Schwarzenegger chose to protect consumers from this unnecessary legislation. However, the fight is not over, our opponents will return. WQA remains committed to ensuring that Californians have safe and clean water. We will continue to work together with the Governor and the Legislature on solutions that will create a healthier environment and will benefit California's water future.
