Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell will be the keynote speaker at the OpeningSession for the
95thAnnual Kiwanis International Convention in Las Vegas.
Before becoming Secretary of State, Powell served 35 years in the United States Army,rising to the rank of Four-Star General and serving as Chairman of the JointChiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993.
Powell was the founding chairman of America's Promise-The Alliancefor Youth, a national crusade to improve the lives of our nation's youth.Established at the Presidents' Summit for America's Future in Philadelphia inApril 1997, and endorsed by every living U.S. President, America's Promise aimsto ensure all American children have access to the fundamental resources neededto build and strengthen them to become responsible, productive adults. He also hasbeen a member ofthe Board of Trustees of Howard University and theBoard of Directors of the United Negro College Fund. Powell also served on theBoard of Governors of The Boys & Girls Clubs of America and was a member ofthe Advisory Board of the Children's Health Fund.
Powell recently told the
Wall Street Journal:"This is the time to give more, to step forward and serve our fellow citizens."
