As his first year in the White House comes to a close, President Barack Obama’s job approval rating has fallen to a new low, according to a
CBS News poll.
The latest national opinion poll released on Monday found that 46 percent of people approve of the president’s performance, marking the first time Obama’s rating has slipped below 50 percent in the
CBS survey. His current numbers are down from a high of nearly 70 percent in April of 2009.
According to the poll, healthcare and the economy are the two most prominent factors contributing to the president’s low score. The survey, conducted early in January, found that only 36 percent of Americans support Obama’s handling of healthcare reform while just 41 percent approve of his managing of the economy.
Meanwhile, fear of another terrorist attack has increased, although the majority of Americans commend the current administration’s response to the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound airplane.
Last month, Obama said he expected the fall in ratings and that he was "surprised they held up as well as they did" considering the state of the economy.
