The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine suggests that practicing yoga has the ability to improve mood and reduce anxiety.
A team of scientists found that brain chemicals associated with better mood and stress relief showed elevated levels in study participants after they did yoga poses.
"This is important work that establishes some objective bases for the effects that highly trained practitioners of yoga therapy throughout the world see on a daily basis," said Kim A. Jobst, editor-in-chief of the journal in which the study was published.
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a brain chemical which is commonly low in individuals with mood or stress disorders. The Boston University researchers observed that more GABA was released in the brains of participants after they practiced yoga.
Results of the study suggests that yoga may be an effective alternative therapy for those seeking relief from anxiety or persistent bad moods.
The American Psychological Association has reported that the majority of people in the U.S. say they experience moderate to severe stress on a regular basis. Symptoms include irritability, fatigue and a loss of energy.
