we have won two key U.S. Supreme Court rulings for families!
PTC E-ALERT
Together, we have won two key U.S. Supreme Court rulings for families!
- Last week the Supreme Court found that the FCC does indeed have the authority to fine TV networks for using the "F-word" in front of children.
- And yesterday the Supreme Court ruled against CBS for their broadcast of the Janet Jackson "striptease" during the 2004 Super Bowl.
The story of the PTC's Supreme Court successes have been carried in many news reports -- showing the tremendous impact we have had in protecting children!
These two legal victories positively and profoundly affect every family in America. You can be sure that unless the PTC had forced the FCC to act, the networks would be airing the F-word and full-frontal nudity on a regular basis.
While we are proud of the Supreme Court victories, we must now redouble our efforts. We know that the next wave of attacks on common-sense decency is imminent. There is still much work to be done:
- More court challenges to FCC broadcast decency enforcement loom ahead.
- Cable subscribers must be able to choose -- and pay for -- only those channels they want, rather than being forced to pay for a "bundle" of networks that includes graphic and offensive programming.
- Advertisers need to know we are watching their every move and that we will challenge them if they sponsor harmful programs.
- The PTC will stay vigilant as new FCC commissioners are appointed by the Obama administration. There is concern that the FCC will not be as committed to enforcing decency laws.
The high court rulings leave no doubt: The PTC gets results. And yet, these impressive results come in a time of unprecedented fundraising challenges. We just completed the 2008 financial audit, and the PTC saw its revenue drop by nearly one third.
I am sure you know the difficult environment facing all nonprofit groups in today's economy. We cannot continue this important work without your help.
Your generosity has been the primary factor in making these victories possible. You can be proud of your role in helping achieve results.
