MT Rose California USA Mt. Rose was discovered in the early 1930s when members of the Reno Ski Club, including local historian Bill Berry and Squaw Valley cofounder Wayne Poulson, climbed up Slide Mountain due west of Washoe City in search of a ski area site. The group returned in 1938 to ride Nevada's first surface lift, an Upski, at the state's first ski area, built without lodge, day facilities, or name.
