Erica, daughter of an alcoholic mother and absent father, is a would-be dancer who falls into an abusive relationship, then finds herself pregnant, homeless, and an alcoholic herself. But Erica’s life begins to turn around when she is taken in by Joan, a woman who runs an informal shelter out of her home. With the help of Joan, her friend Tina, and the other girls in the home, Erica slowly forges a new path in her life, finding the will to live, the courage to endure, and ultimately, redemption.

Though it is uncompromising and realistic about the difficulties faced and mistakes made by Erica and the other women, A Cross to Bear contains no graphic content. One woman discusses how she murdered her husband, and abusive relationships are implied. A key moment revolves around the burning death of an infant, but this is not shown, merely implied and discussed. There are a few scenes of Erica and others drinking, though generally the women’s struggles with liquor and drugs are also implied or referred to in dialogue, not shown. A Cross to Bear is a masterful example of how even the most difficult and horrifying events can be depicted sensitively, realistically, and sincerely, without employing graphic language, sex, or gore.

Because of its tremendous power, honest and unflinching depiction of reality, and deeply touching and inspirational message, the Parents Television Council is proud to award A Cross to Bear with the PTC Seal of ApprovalTM. Because some of its subject matter may be inappropriate for younger children, the PTC recommends this movie for viewers over age 13.
