ObamaNet Won't Avoid Senate Scrutiny

12.15.10 02:01 PM

In today's Washington Times I explained the FCC's expected move next week to ignore Congress, the courts, and the American people and start regulating the Internet.
Like ObamaCare last Christmas Eve, Obama's Internet regulatory scheme--call it ObamaNet--will take over about a sixth of the economy.
This Christmas, the White House thinks they can do it without even a vote of Congress. They are wrong.
Two letters from Senate Republicans show that even before the cavalry of new conservative senators arrive to join their ranks, there are already more than the 30 required to force a vote on overturning the regulations under the Congressional Review Act.
The main letter was led by Senator John Ensign and had 29 signatures -- plus several others who would have signed but weren't available in this hectic lame duck session. (Olympia Snowe, a supporter of net neutrality regulation who nonetheless recognizes the FCC does not have the power to implement it against the will of Congress, sent her own letter.)
We need to keep the heat on Congress to stop the FCC and send a clear message to the administration that they can't use agencies to ignore the election, bypass Congress, and cheat the American people.
