$124M paid to fight 9/11 suits

It's un-bill-ievable.
Lawyers hired by the city to fight the Ground Zero lawsuits have socked taxpayers with a $124 million tab -- one of the biggest hauls by a single legal team in the history of billable hours, experts say.
For the last six years, two law partners have run up a mountain of fees and expenses paid from a $1 billion federal fund the city received to cover claims from the World Trade Center cleanup.
James Tyrrell and Joseph Hopkins, partners at Patton Boggs, have led the city's efforts to avoid liability for ailments suffered by cops, firefighters, hardhats and others who toiled at the toxic site
Battling the heroes has won them and their firm a fortune in taxpayer bucks.
A source said the WTC Captive Insurance Co., which manages the $1 billion fund, has paid Tyrell and Hopkins' team $124 million before any sick 9/11 worker has received compensation.
