Royal yacht takes on water after door leak

01.07.12 12:01 PM

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Emergency services pumped water from the Royal Yacht Britannia after it began listing while being transported from Edinburgh, Scotland, for repair work.

"She was taking on water and listing pretty badly, so we're desperately trying to pump the water out at the moment," a Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said Friday.

Authorities said a leak in a door seal caused the yacht to take in water, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The 412-foot royal vessel was being move to have its hull repainted.

"When we were removing the mooring ropes this morning the ship moved four degrees to starboard," Bob Downie, chief executive of the Royal Yacht Britannia, said Friday. "This meant that new access watertight doors to our pontoons were below the water level. There has been a leak in the seals in those doors which was accentuating the list."

Officials said they do not believe there are any other problems with the yacht, which is usually docked in Edinburgh as a tourist attraction.
