Bahrain opposition seeks govít resignation

11.24.11 03:41 PM

MANAMA, Bahrain, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- The main opposition group in Bahrain said the government should resign after an independent commission found evidence torture was used against protesters.

The government claims Iran interfered in protests this spring, leading Saudi-led Gulf forces to enter Bahrain, but the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry found no evidence of foreign meddling, the Financial Times reported.

A spokesman for opposition party al-Wefaq said opposition leaders would be willing to work with Crown Prince Sheik Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa if he agreed to implement the commission's recommendations.

"If he is given a chance to revive his initiative for a resolution we are ready to work with him," Khalil al-Marzooq told reporters, the Times said.

Al-Wefaq called for greater U.N. involvement in advancing the commission's report recommendations.
