Americans for Prosperity Applauds Earmark Executive Order

Americans for Prosperity Applauds Earmark Executive Order as “One More Step” in Right Direction, Challenges Presidential Candidates to Pledge to Extend Bush’s Reform

WASHINGTON – Tim Phillips, President of the national free-market grassroots group Americans for Prosperity, today released the following statement in response to President Bush’s signing of an executive order that instructs his agencies to ignore non-binding pork-barrel earmarks:

“Today’s executive order represents another real step in what has become a long and significant road toward true earmark reform over the past couple of years,” said Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips. “Of course, taxpayers don’t want to see this new reform disappear when a new President assumes power next January, so we’re challenging every presidential candidate to pledge today that he or she will extend the executive order that President Bush signed this afternoon.”

“Less than two years ago, Americans for Prosperity began a lonely cross-country campaign for reform called the Ending Earmarks Express. Since then, through our efforts and the efforts of our friends in other pro-taxpayer groups, the Porkbusters blogging community, taxpayers from coast to coast and courageous leaders on Capitol Hill, we’ve now seen one earmark reform package passed by the Republican Congress, another reform package passed by the Democratic Congress, additional self-imposed reforms and a call for a Congressional earmark moratorium by the Republican minority, and now a Presidential executive order further limiting questionable earmarks.

“But the job is obviously not done. Too many Members of Congress are still securing millions of taxpayer dollars for their campaign contributors or well-connected cronies. Too many Members of Congress are still securing billions of federal taxpayer dollars for local projects that have little to no value and/or lie completely outside the responsibility of the federal government.

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi should rise to the House Republican challenge to accept a total earmark moratorium until further reforms can be implemented. Meanwhile, House Republican leaders and rank-and-file Members should consider truly leading by example and self-imposing a one-year pork-barrel moratorium, effective immediately. The House GOP Steering Committee should also put a proven earmark reformer like Congressman Jeff Flake on the Appropriations Committee who will act as taxpayer watchdog instead of a pork-barrel practitioner.

“Some say ending earmarks is impossible, but who would have guessed two years ago where we’d be today?”
