NRA says no to support for new gun age requirements

02.23.18 08:23 AM

President Donald Trump recently predicted that the National Rifle Association would back new efforts to increase the minimum age required to purchase semi-automatic rifles in the United States. The NRA says it won’t.

NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch told CNN that increasing the age required to purchase firearms like that used in the recent Florida school shooting “is not going to solve psychosis.”

This is at odds with Trump’s suggestion that 21, rather than the current 18, should be the minimum required age to purchase so-called assault rifles in the U.S.

“It should all be at 21,” Trump said. “And the NRA will back it.”

The NRA, however, continues to maintain that any such action would simply punish law abiding Americans.

NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker explained the group’s reasoning in a recent statement.

“Passing a law that makes it illegal for a 20-year-old to purchase a shotgun for hunting or adult single mother from purchasing the most effective self-defense rifle on the market punishes law-abiding citizens for the evil acts of criminals,” she said.

The NRA is likely to be at odds with Trump in addition to a handful of GOP lawmakers who appear to be warming to the idea of raising the age of purchase for the rifles.

“A kid too young (to) buy a handgun should be too young to buy an #AR15,” Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake recently said via Twitter.

Flake, according to reports, is currently working with California Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein on legislation that would increase the minimum age requirement.
