White House: Trump DOES NOT support assault weapon ban

02.22.18 10:01 PM

When asked about President Donald Trump’s endorsement of the assault weapon ban in his 200 book “The America We Deserve,” a White House spokesman said the president doesn’t support reinstating the ban in the wake of recent mass shootings.

“He campaigned for*president and was opposed to*the assault weapons ban, and his position hasn’t*changed on that,” White House press secretary Raj Shah said.

Back in 2000, the president lamented in his book that hardliners on both sides of the political divide were wrong when it came to gun control options.

“Democrats want to confiscate all guns, which is a dumb idea because only the law-abiding citizens would turn in their guns and the bad guys would be the only ones left armed. The Republicans walk to NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions,” he wrote.

Trump added:*“I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun.”

New questions about the president’s definitive stance on gun control efforts come after Trump* directed the Department of Justice to come up with a plan to ban bump stocks and other similar firearm accessories.

“We can do more to protect our children. We must do more to protect our children,” the president said at a recent White House event.

Later, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders suggested that the president was open to considering all options to protect Americans from mass shooters.

“I don’t have any specific announcements, but we haven’t closed the door on any front,” she told reporters.

The White House’s comments this week appear aimed at eliminating uncertainty over whether the president will waiver on his promise not to sign new assault weapons banning legislation.
