Preserve your vision with this food

You’ve probably heard that an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Turns out, an orange a day might work better.

If you do absolutely nothing else to protect your vision, you should at least eat an orange each and every day.

People who eat at least one serving of oranges every day have more than a 60 percent reduced risk of developing macular degeneration, which impacts about one in seven people over the age of 50.

Surprisingly, it’s not the fruit’s vitamin C content producing the favorable results, but instead the flavonoids in the oranges. Flavonoids are dietary compounds found in a range of food groups and beverages that have been shown to reduce inflammation and oxidated stress within the body.

Preserving and protecting your vision doesn’t stop at that tasty treat. Here are four additional tips for healthier eyesight for life:

1. Eat right — Green leafy veggies are the key to healthy eyes since research shows that diets rich in lutein and zeaxanthin lower your risk for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataract and dry eye later in life. It’s also a good idea to take a high quality lutein and zeaxanthin supplement. My favorite is Peak Vision Support.

2. Wear sunglasses — UV blocking sunglasses help to prevent retinal damage and the cataracts that come with it. Be sure to look for 100 percent UV-A and UV-B protection in the sunglasses you choose.

3. Stop smoking — Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for age-related macular degeneration. So if you want to keep your vision, drop the habit.

4. Take a break — Eye fatigue is a real problem with the hours and hours we all spend on computers and other devices these days; it can wreak havoc with your vision. Be sure to take regular breaks and use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes look at something that’s at least 20 feet in front of you for at least 20 seconds.
