Minnesota Man Teaches Casket Making

04.16.12 11:32 AM

NEW YORK MILLS, Minn., (UPI) — A Minnesota woodworker said he is making some extra money by teaching classes for people seeking to build homemade caskets for themselves or family members.

Patrick Kilby, a furniture builder from New York Mills, said he learned how to make a casket in 2007 when his mother, Carolyn, died and he and his sister soon discovered a decent wood casket started at about $3,500, KSAX-TV, Alexandria, Minn., reported Friday.

“It was relaxing, but to be perfectly honest with you, I stood there and cried too while I made it, because you realize that it is final,” Kilby said.

Kilby said his new shop, A Simple Pine Box, helps people learn new skills while making caskets they can take home for $500 to $2,000.

“Our objective would be to educate what their rights are, to help them accomplish what they need for that end-of-life situation, to give them a sense of ownership and to have them learn a new set of skills,” he said.

Kilby said some customers have been taking the caskets home to use as furniture until the time comes for their intended use.
