#NeverGOPWhiteHouse: More Republicans aim at feet, cock the hammer

08.12.16 10:41 AM

In an open letter to Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, more than 70 Republican insiders are urging the RNC to stop spending money on Donald Trump’s presidential bid.

“We believe that Donald Trump’s divisiveness, recklessness, incompetence, and record-breaking unpopularity risk turning this election into a Democratic landslide, and only the immediate shift of all available RNC resources to vulnerable Senate and House races will prevent the GOP from drowning with a Trump-emblazoned anchor around its neck,” says a draft of the letter leaked to POLITICO. “This should not be a difficult decision, as Donald Trump’s chances of being elected president are evaporating by the day.”

The letter, which is expected to be sent next week, includes the signatures of Sen. Gordon Humphrey (N.H.) and former Reps. Chris Shays (Conn.), Tom Coleman (Miss.) and Vin Weber (Minn.), along with a number of former RNC staffers, including (POLITICO reported): “Mindy Finn (former RNC chief digital strategist), Christine Iverson Gunderson (former RNC press secretary), Virginia Hume Onufer (former RNC deputy press secretary), Beth Miller (former RNC field communications division director), Heather Layman (former deputy press secretary), B. Jay Cooper (former RNC communications director under four chairmen) and Patrick Ruffini (former RNC ecampaign director).”

The letter reportedly points to numerous recent Trump controversies, declaring *that the candidate has “alienated millions of voters of all parties.”

From the letter: “Those recent outrages have built on his campaign of anger and exclusion, during which he has mocked and offended millions of voters, including the disabled, women, Muslims, immigrants, and minorities. He also has shown dangerous authoritarian tendencies, including threats to ban an entire religion from entering the country, order the military to break the law by torturing prisoners, kill the families of suspected terrorists, track law-abiding Muslim citizens in databases, and use executive orders to implement other illegal and unconstitutional measures.”

Andrew Weinstein, one of the anti-Trump GOP operatives who organized the letter, told POLITICO the letter is not “an endorsement of anybody.”

Rather, it seems, the message is that some Republican insiders believe it is impossible for the GOP to win the White House at this point. As a result, they want the party to focus on shoring up congressional power.

Of course, looking at massive turnout for Trump throughout the GOP primaries and his continued ability to build support among Republicans outside the Beltway establishment, one can’t help but wonder how it isn’t a tacit endorsement of Democrat Hillary Clinton’s candidacy. In fact, it even looks a little like a wink and nod toward her current efforts to court GOP hawks.
