Takeout more likely to cause disease than home-cooked meals

There’s a hidden danger in restaurant food that most of us have never heard of. It has to do with how your food is handled and packaged to come home with you.

Most, if not all, restaurant food comes packaged — not fresh like what you buy at the grocery store. That’s where this problem starts.

Phthalates, a group of chemicals used in food packaging and processing materials, are to blame. Phthalates are known hormone disruptors and are linked to a long list of health problems, including cancer.

To make matters worse, many other products used in restaurants, like to-go boxes, gloves and food processing equipment, contain phthalates. Previous research shows that these chemicals can leach directly into your food from plastic containers or wrapping.

These facts are what set researchers at the University of California Berkeley School of Public Health on the trail of a major health risk.

Their study was the first to compare phthalate exposures in people who reported dining out to people more likely to enjoy home-cooked meals.

People who reported eating more restaurant, fast food and cafeteria meals had phthalate levels that were nearly 35 percent higher than people who reported eating food mostly purchased at the grocery store.

And this wasn’t a small study with suspect data, the research involved data on over 10,000 people over period of 10 years.

That’s really scary considering that two-thirds of us eat out daily.

The first step in stopping the damage phthalates can cause is to limit your exposure.

That means a return to home cooking, skipping the takeout as often as possible.

Preparing your food at home is a win-win. It’s a good way to reduce the sugar, salt and unhealthy fats you’re consuming and skip the harmful chemicals as well.

Additionally, if you’ve been eating out regularly, you should consider detoxifying and supporting your liver which is responsible for processing and eliminating all of the harmful chemicals your body comes into contact with.
