Senate Candidate: Let’s Move The Capitol Out Of Washington

01.06.14 10:01 PM

It has been widely publicized that the GOP establishment is going to campaign against Tea Party candidates with the same vigor that it attacks Democrats leading up to the 2014 elections. But even as the political class works overtime to fool voters into perpetuating the status quo political shell game in Washington, small-government conservatives are appealing to American frustration with the corrupt and ineffectual state of affairs at the Capitol.

Republican Senate candidate Ben Sasse of Nebraska is exactly the kind of candidate that the establishment GOP will likely go to great effort to undermine. In a recent political advertisement, the university President and former George W. Bush Administration official suggested that establishment politicians and the special interests they’re beholden to have so corrupted the Nation’s capital that America’s best bet for prosperity could be moving the Capitol out of Washington.

“That’s it, the way to cure the incredible ineffectiveness and dysfunction of both parties in Washington — we move the Capitol to Nebraska,” the candidate said in an ad spot dubbed “The Outsider,” which aired during an NFL playoff game.

While the candidate admits that actually moving the Nation’s capital is likely an impossible goal, he says the suggestion is an effort to point out how far-removed Washington’s politicians have become from average Americans throughout the rest of the country.

“I think that they, Nebraska work-a-day folks, think that we’re on the precipice of national decline and they don’t think Washington gets it at all,” Sasse told The Washington Times.

In a separate statement, the candidate explained that his suggestion is meant to express the importance of increasing the power of the American everyman in Washington to change the course of national politics.

“As someone who’s not a career politician, I wanted to introduce myself to Nebraskans in a way that would explain what this campaign is about,” Sasse told Breitbart News. “DC is a sick, dysfunctional place. I’ve seen it up close. We’re going to lose our country if we don’t act quickly.”

Sasse and other Tea Party candidates are facing an uphill battle in 2014, as the will have to contend with establishment Republicans and efforts by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to defeat small-government candidates in addition to Democrats.
