AFP-FL disappointed in Florida Senators that voted to keep sports slush fund and use state dollars to own movie projects* TALLAHASSEE – Americans for Prosperity-Florida (AFP-FP) reacted to Senator Tom Lee’s SB 236 failing, and Senator Audrey Gibson’s SB 1576 passing the Commerce and Tourism Committee. SB 1576 would create a supposed self-sustaining seed fund to award tax dollars to film industry projects. SB 236 would have eliminated the sports development program that had not yet used up any of the funds it was allotted. Americans for Prosperity-Florida State Director Chris Hudson issued the following statement: “We are disappointed in Florida Senators that passed on an opportunity to eliminate a corporate welfare program dedicated to handing out taxpayer dollars to privately owned sports teams. This is an absurd use of taxpayer resources that should be dedicated to legitimate functions of government. Previously, all of the teams that requested money from the sports development fund – which had all failed to secure legislative approval – completed their projects without state funding.
