The Most Expensive School Board Race in U.S. History Isnít About the Kids

On May 16th, residents in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will cast their votes in what has become the most expensive school board race in U.S. History. By the time the ballots are in the box, total spending for the race Ė which centers around two spots on the seven-member board Ė will have exceeded $11.4 million. Those familiar with the race say that there is one primary reason that the campaign has become so contentious and expensive, and it doesnít have to do with classroom time, curriculum, or the health and well-being of the districtís over 640,000 schoolchildren. Rather, candidates are fighting for the ability to influence the terms of several of the districtís largest union contracts, which are set to expire this summer. As it stands, the current composition of the school board is a 5-2 split between pro-union and reform-minded members, respectively. If the two reform candidates are elected, the balance of the board would swing to a 4-3 split in favor of the reform advocates, leaving the pro-union forces on the board disempowered.
