‘We Need to Show the Evidence’: Melania Trump Speaks on #MeToo

On 10.10.18 10:57 AM posted by Tristan Justice

First lady Melania Trump offers her views on the #MeToo movement against sexual misconduct in a new interview, saying women “need to show the evidence.”

“I support the women and they need to be heard. We need to support them—also, men. Not just women,” Trump told ABC News during the interview, set to air Friday. “We need to have really hard evidence … show the evidence.”

Trump then took a play from her husband’s playbook, blaming the media for going “too far” in its reporting of allegations of sexual misconduct.

“I do stand with women, but we need to show the evidence. You cannot just say to somebody, ‘I was sexually assaulted’ or ‘You did that to me,’ because sometimes the media goes too far,” Trump said. “The way they portray some stories, it’s not correct. It’s not right.”

Heritage Foundation legal policy analyst Amy Swearer said the first lady was “spot on” when it comes to believing women who come forward with claims of sexual assault.

“Of course, we shouldn’t callously and immediately dismiss allegations of sexual assault,” Swearer said in an emailed statement to The Daily Signal. “But neither should we callously and immediately declare the allegation to be absolutely true prior to any rational assessment of the evidence.”

Trump’s rare interview comes after her first solo trip abroad, where the famously private first lady toured the four African nations of Ghana, Malawi, Kenya, and Egypt.

While abroad, Trump also surprised reporters with a brief, impromptu press conference in Egypt where she weighed in on the #MeToo controversy that surrounded the confirmation process for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused by Christine Blasey Ford of sexually assaulting her when they were teens.

“I’m glad that Dr. Ford was heard. I’m glad that Judge Kavanaugh was heard. The FBI investigation is done, is completed and [the] Senate voted,” Trump said, adding that she believes Kavanaugh to be highly qualified to serve on the bench.
