Helicopter crashes in Fla. with 3 aboard

12.26.11 11:24 AM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Dec. 26 (UPI) -- A helicopter leaving the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., with three aboard crashed early Sunday, officials said.

The Florida Times-Union, reporting on jacksonville.com, said all three apparently were killed.

Searchers from several counties were looking for the wreckage. The report said the Federal Aviation Administration at first said the crash occurred in the Palatka, Fla., area, but the state Highway Patrol said the site actually was closer to the Putnam County-Clay County line.

Officials said it was a heavily wooded area.

An FAA spokeswoman, Kathleen Bergen, said a pilot and two passengers were aboard the Bell 260, owned by SK Jets in St. Augustine, jacksonville.com reported.

The aircraft was headed to Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville, and Berger said she was told there were no survivors. However, she said she could not confirm that.

Bergen said apparently neither of the passengers was a patient.
