Eighty-seven state representatives put Floridians’ best interests ahead of those of special interests when they voted in favor of*House Bill 7005. This vote—thanks to the leadership of House Speaker Richard Corcoran—was a big win for taxpayers because it brings the Sunshine State one step closer to finally eliminating Enterprise Florida, a corporate welfare slush-fund that handed out taxpayer dollars to politically-connected big businesses. Eliminating this program desperately needed because the agency has failed to achieve its goals of job creation and private development in the state since its creation in the early 1990s.* Where are the jobs?*Between 1995 and 2005, the agency promised to create 20,000 high-paying jobs. In 2013—eight years past that deadline—Enterprise Florida had given more than*$1.7 billion*in incentives but only reached half its goal.* There are many specific examples of these failures to choose from. Consider the $85 million in tax credits, refunds, and subsidies Enterprise Florida gave Hertz to move its headquarters to Lee County in 2013.
