More Good News For Red Wine Lovers

New York researchers have found that resveratrol, an antioxidant most plentiful in grapes and red wine, slashes levels of amyloid-beta peptides, the main ingredient of mind-devastating brain plaques of Alzheimer's.

Dr. Philippe Marambaud and his colleagues at the Litwin-Zucker Center for the Study of Alzheimer's Disease in Manhasset found that resveratrol actually cut the amount of amyloid-beta peptides in and around brain cells.

Dr. Marambaud believes the compound acts by speeding the breakdown of amyloid-beta, so it can be removed from brain cells.

"Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol occurring in abundance in several plants, including grapes, berries and peanuts," he said.

"The polyphenol is found in high concentrations in red wines. The highest concentration of resveratrol has been reported in wines prepared from Pinot Noir grapes. Generally, white wines contain one percent to five percent of the resveratrol content present in most red wines."

But Dr. Maramabaud said wine may not contain enough resveratrol to work quickly. "Maybe if you drink wine for 20 years, you may have a beneficial effect. But people want to hear something in the short term.

For this reason, the New York team is looking at faster-working and more stable compounds.

"We have already obtained analogues of resveratrol that are 20 times more potent than the original natural compound," Dr. Marambaud says.

"We are now aiming to find more stable analogues and to test them in vivo in mice."

Earlier studies have found that resveratrol lowers the risks for heart disease and cancer and scientists are beginning to look at its effects in Parkinson's and Huntington's Disease
