“California has a 12.5 percent unemployment rate, one of the highest tax rates in the country and is considered one of the most hostile environments for businesses,” explained State Chairman Peter Foy. “We cannot continue on this path over a cliff to fiscal ruin. Instead, we must respect taxpayers by returning tax rates to reasonable levels, making regulations fair and understandable and reward business ingenuity. This Taxpayer Caucus is a way for legislators to show that they truly are on the side of taxpayers, not special interests.”

GOP bill would end California pension bargaining

“Following the lead of Wisconsin's governor, a Republican state assemblyman announced legislation Tuesday intended to eliminate collective bargaining for pension benefits by California's public employees. The bill by Assemblyman Allan Mansoor of Costa Mesa attempts to address the soaring costs of retired public employees, but has little chance in a Legislature controlled by Democrats.

CA Budget Still Needs Fumigation

“As Gov. Jerry Brown and the state Legislature continue crafting a budget, skunks keep being thrown into the room. The biggest skunk is that the $146 billion California State Teachers’ Retirement System, CalSTRS, is effectively insolvent. Funded at 80 percent of liabilities today, CalSTRS calculations show that it’s funding will drop to 0 percent of liabilities by 2042, just 31 years from now.

Battle in Oakland as pension fund payment looms

“A battle over how to pay for a pension fund is looming as the biggest political battle in Oakland. The city in 1997 issued a bond to give itself a 15-year holiday from regularly paying into an old police and fire pension. But the pension's investments soured, and now the city will owe $46 million on July 1. It's an amount that some city officials say the city can't afford because the city also has to close a $40 million-plus shortfall in its $400 million General Fund budget by July 1.”
