$16 muffins gone from revised report

10.28.11 09:20 PM

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- A revised report released Friday debunks the story that the U.S. Justice Department paid $16.80 each for muffins at the Capital Hilton.

The pricey muffins had become a symbol of government profligacy. But the office of the department's acting Inspector General Cynthia A. Schnedar says the department actually paid that amount per head for a continental breakfast at a 2009 conference sponsored by the Executive Office for Immigration Review.

The price included coffee, tea, juice, fruit and pastries.

The office apologized for its erroneous earlier report, saying it "brought significant negative publicity to the Department and the Capital Hilton.'' But the report stood by its earlier conclusion that the Justice Department spends too much on food for its conferences.

Other expensive menu items included in the report -- which looked at 10 conferences from the administrations of President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush -- include a lunch at the Hilton in San Francisco with Berkshire pork carnitas for $76 a head.
