2nd Annual Concert in the Canyon

On 10.01.2011, the Kiwanis Club of Chatsworth joined Ride with Pride for their second annual Concert in the Canyon featuring the Doo-Wah Riders, raising $10,000 to support its therapeutic horseback riding program. Hot dogs and hamburgers were cooked and served by the Kiwanis to more than 300 guests. Borderline Bar and Grill donated the dance floor, PRG provided the lighting and Saunders Electric provided a generator. Guests enjoyed a BBQ, silent auction, road apple bingo, practice roping and, of course, lots of dancing to the great music.

Ride with Pride's mission is to provide quality recreational and therapeutic horseback riding lessons to persons with physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities. We strive to strengthen the body, mind and heart.

We are a 501(c) (3) tax exempt non-profit corporation, working under the guidelines of NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association, Inc.). We are offering lessons five days a week; Tuesday through Friday.

I am delighted to introduce Rick King as our Program Director. Before joining us, Rick had worked in the therapeutic horseback riding field as a volunteer, instructor and Director of Facilities. He has a huge body of experience in many aspects of horseback riding. Our program also has an experienced and dedicated board of directors. All of these individuals have been working many hours, on a volunteer basis, because of their belief in our program, to be part of this amazing opportunity of witnessing the growth between disabled persons and their four-footed friends. Their commitment to this new venture has been amazing.

There are many volunteer opportunities available at Ride with Pride. Volunteers are crucial to the success of our program. We cannot put people on horses without volunteers, we cannot fundraise without volunteers, and we cannot reach out to our community without volunteers. We have a volunteer training program, and we qualify for community service hours to those needing school credit.

As Ride with Pride moves forward we will be dependent on contributions from individuals, businesses and corporations, grant funding, and income from fundraising. We will be planning fundraisers throughout the year, with a least one major fundraiser in 2010. We will be asking everyone to sign up their Ralphs club cards for Ride with Pride. We also accept donations of tack from the community which will be used in the program or it will be sold to provide needed funds.

Along with all of Ride with Pride's activities we also want to be a part of the community that we serve. We will work with the Chamber of Commerce, the neighborhood council, and participate in community activities such as parades and festivals.

Ride with Pride will be a positive force in the lives of our riders, our volunteers and our community. This is where our focus will be directed. I know there is a long road ahead, but with the continued enthusiasm, I feel this goal is achievable.

Thank you for your support.

Bill UpdeGraff
Executive Director
Ride with Pride
