Occupy protesters arrested in Boston

12.10.11 11:36 AM

BOSTON, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- About four dozen Occupy movement protesters were arrested Saturday by Boston police intent on emptying an encampment in Dewey Square, authorities said.

Hundreds of officers swept through the encampment, tearing down tents the protesters had erected in the past 10 weeks, The Boston Globe reported. No injuries were reported as officers took at least 46 people into custody, mostly on trespassing charges, the newspaper said.

The action occurred after an officer used a bullhorn to advise the protesters they were trespassing and would be arrested if they didn't leave immediately, the Globe said.

"Tell me what democracy looks like. This is what democracy looks like," the Globe said demonstrators chanted back.

Police Superintendent William Evans expressed satisfaction with how the eviction effort went.

"They wanted to get arrested. It went very well, and we're very happy with this operation," Evans said.
