11.18.11 11:01 PM

NEW YORK, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- A 12-year-old boy Friday admitted his role in dropping a shopping cart from the fourth floor of a New York City building, critically injuring a woman below.

"I held the shopping cart over, and I knew people was down there," the boy, who turned 13 Saturday, told a Family Court judge Friday. "And I knew somebody could have gotten hurt.

The boy, who is to be back in court Dec. 6 to have his sentencing date set, could be placed on probation or incarcerated for up to five years, the New York Post reported.

"I may well return him to the community on the next court date," Judge Susan Larabee said.

A second 12-year-old boy jailed in the incident is appear in court Wednesday.

The victim, real estate agent Marion Salmon Hedges, 47, was buying Halloween goodies for underprivileged children with her 13-year-old son Oct. 30 when the cart hit her. She remains in serious condition, the Post said.
