Twin Cities nears drought record

11.18.11 06:00 PM

ST. PAUL, Minn., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Minnesota's Twin Cities are closing in on a record for the driest fall in 141 years, a state climatologist said.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has recorded just 1.06 inches of rain since Sept. 1, the St. Paul Pioneer-Press reported Friday. That's 5.42 inches below normal for the September-November period.

If the Twin Cities get less than 0.48 inches of precipitation through the end of the month, it would be a drier autumn than 1889 when there was 1.54 inches during the three-month period, assistant state climatologist Pete Boulay told the newspaper.

The Twin Cities are forecast to get a mix of rain and snow Saturday. But National Weather Service meteorologist Shawn Devinny predicts only 0.2 inches will fall.
