Anti-Thaksin rally held in Bangkok

11.18.11 06:21 PM

BANGKOK, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- About 1,000 people rallied in Bangkok Friday against any attempt to pardon former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The protesters are supporters of the anti-Red Shirt Network for Citizen Volunteers Protecting the Land, the Bangkok Post reported.

Tul Sithisomwong, leader of the network, called for people nationwide who oppose a proposed royal decree that could lead to a pardon of the former prime minister to sign their names to lists, the newspaper said. He said supporters would gather at Government House Monday to submit petitions to put pressure on the government.

The People's Alliance for Democracy plans a large rally Monday against the proposed decree, alliance spokesman Panthep Puapongpan said.

Under the proposal, about 25,000 people convicted of various offenses who meet the criteria could be pardoned.

Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit, who serves as interior minister, has rejected the opposition groups' request that the fugitive former prime minister not be allowed to evade a two-year jail sentence for abuse of power while in office.
