Gbagbo’s son challenges house arrest

11.19.11 12:58 PM

BOBIGNY, France, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- The son of former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo is challenging his house arrest in French courts.

Michael Gbagbo's French lawyer, Habiba Toure, said Friday that he has filed a lawsuit in Bobigny, France, accusing the current Ivory Coast government that ousted former President Gbagbo of kidnapping, illegal detention and inhuman and degrading treatment, Radio France Internationale reported.

Both Michael and Laurent Gbagbo have been under house arrest in the north-eastern town of Bouna since their arrest in April in Abidjan.

Since then, current Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara's government has failed to produce evidence supporting their detention, Toure argued.

Officials have also accused the people responsible for detaining Laurent Gbagbo of circulating videos of him on the Internet, which "exhibit him as a trophy of war."

Laurent Gbagbo filed a lawsuit against the French military in July for attempted murder.
