A ‘different kind of Republican’ for 2016 voters?

04.06.15 12:11 PM

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who is expected to become an official candidate for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination on Tuesday, wants potential supporters to think of him as “a different kind of Republican.”

Paul’s camp released a YouTube video on Easter Sunday that highlights a mixed bag of leaders and political commentators — including Newt Gingrich, Jon Stewart from “The Daily Show,” CNN’s Candy Crowley and MSNBC’s Chris Mathews, among otherspraising Paul’s principle and positions.

The diverse group in the video is indicative of Paul’s to reach beyond the demographic of Fox News Republicans in a bid to bring more youth and minority support to the GOP. The Kentucky lawmaker has long advocated for a more diverse Republican base, which he says is necessary if the party ever hopes to reclaim control of the White House.

“I think Republicans will not win again in my lifetime … unless they become a new GOP, a new Republican Party,” Paul said during an interview with Glenn Beck last year. “And it has to be a transformation. Not a little tweaking at the edges.”

At the time, Paul said that he was “proud of the fact that there is a struggle” going on within the GOP.

“And I will struggle to make the Republican Party a different party, a bigger party, a more diverse party, and a party that can win national elections again,” he said.

Ahead of Paul’s presidential announcement, The Hill noted that Paul has worked to surround himself with people who are also up for the challenge of broadening the GOP’s appeal:
Paul has surrounded himself with campaign advisers known for breaking the mold.

His campaign manager in waiting, Chip Englander, managed Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s successful bid in Illinois, which was notable for making inroads in parts of the state that Republicans had traditionally written off.

Paul’s staff moves also reflect his courtship of Silicon Valley, where he has sought to capitalize on the libertarian streak that runs through the industry. Paul’s well-regarded digital guru is based in Austin, another national tech hub, and last month he trekked to the city to open an office and speak at the SXSW music festival.

Paul’s Tuesday announcement at an event in Louisville Tuesday will make him the GOP’s second official 2016 presidential hopeful. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) became the first Republican to throw in for the GOP presidential nomination last month.
