Access to Quality Care Hinges on Healthcare Reform

AFP-FL applauds Florida House and Senate for pushing common sense healthcare reform TALLAHASSEE – Americans for Prosperity-Florida (AFP-FL), the state’s leading grassroots advocacy organization for free market healthcare reform, is applauding Representative Heather Fitzenhagen and Senator Greg Steube for sponsoring legislation that would increase access and remove barriers for Florida patients to receive quality healthcare. AFP-FL sent the members of the House Health & Human Services Subcommittee and the Senate committee on Health Policy letters informing them that AFP-FL will score votes on these bills in its annual Economic Freedom Scorecard. Representative Fitzenhagen’s H.B. 27 would repeal the outdated certificate-of-need (CON) policy. CON laws restrict access to quality care by restricting the building of health care facilities. “While the state’s original intent behind this ‘permission slip’ system to increasing community healthcare services may have been to drive down costs, the reality is that certificate-of-need has unnecessarily restricted the supply of healthcare facilities,” said AFP-FL state director, Chris Hudson. “Certificate-of-need has exposed the widespread the shortage of healthcare services in our state.
