House should vote yes to prevent public funding access to sports franchises Tallahassee, FL – Americans for Prosperity-Florida (AFP-FL), the state’s leading grassroots advocacy group against taxpayer handouts to sports franchises, is urging the members of the House Government Accountability Committee to vote “Yes” on Representative Bryan Avila’s sports franchise facilities bill, House Bill 13 (HB13). HB13 would prohibit sports franchises from developing facilities on public lands without meeting strict fair-market value requirements. AFP-FL state director, Chris Hudson released the following statement: “For far too long, taxpayers have been taken advantage of by governments giving special treatment to sports teams through sweetheart land grabs. We commend Representative Avila for bringing up this bill, we thank Representative Manny Diaz for co-sponsoring, and we’re encouraged by Senator Rene Garcia brining up a similar measure in the senate. We hope the Committee passes will pass the bill and send it to the floor quickly and that the Senate doesn’t hesitate to follow suit.” The legislature, lead by Speaker Richard Corcoran and the Florida House has been successful in recent years at keeping taxpayer funds out of the hands of professional sports teams like.
