Trump hits back at detractors in Friday morning tweetstorm

06.16.17 05:38 AM

President Donald Trump took to Twitter early Friday to call the ongoing investigation into his campaign a waste of time and a witch hunt. The president also addressed media ridicule of his Twitter habits.

Trump said of the FBI investigation, which is now focusing on whether his firing of former FBI Director James Comey amounts to obstruction:
After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my "collusion with the Russians," nobody has been able to show any proof. Sad!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 16, 2017

I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt

The Washington Post revealed this week that special counsel Robert Mueller has broadened the ongoing Russia probe and is interviewing top officials about the circumstances surrounding Comey’s firing.

From the report:
Trump had received private assurances from then-FBI Director James B. Comey starting in January that he was not personally under investigation. Officials say that changed shortly after Comey’s firing.

Five people briefed on the interview requests, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said that Daniel Coats, the current director of national intelligence, Mike Rogers, head of the National Security Agency, and Rogers’s recently departed deputy, Richard Ledgett, agreed to be interviewed by Mueller’s investigators as early as this week. The investigation has been cloaked in secrecy, and it is unclear how many others have been questioned by the FBI.

The NSA said in a statement that it will “fully cooperate with the special counsel” and declined to comment further. The office of the director of national intelligence and Ledgett declined to comment.

The White House now refers all questions about the Russia investigation to Trump’s personal attorney, Marc Kasowitz.

Mueller was appointed to lead the investigation by Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein, who originally called for Comey’s firing in a memo to AG Jeff Sessions.

Trump’s Friday tweet was his first acknowledgement of the official obstruction probe.

Also according to reports out Friday, Mueller has hired 13 attorneys to work on the investigation into Trump ties with Russia and plans to add more in coming weeks.

Trump also noted that his administration has successfully added jobs to the economy and created economic optimism amid the distraction of investigations against him.
Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great. Regulations way down, jobs and enthusiasm way up!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 16, 2017

And it isn’t an empty boast. The president’s focus on slashing regulations and promise to cut taxes for businesses has increased enthusiasm among small business owners and produced stock market gains. The economy has added around 600,000 jobs since Trump’s inauguration.

And the president hit the mainstream media before it had a chance to ridicule his tweets.*
The Fake News Media hates when I use what has turned out to be my very powerful Social Media – over 100 million people! I can go around them

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 16, 2017

And it didn’t take long:
