Iknow, I know...it's a heck of a time to be talking about winter, when summerisn't even in full swing yet.

But I just couldn't wait to share this news with you. If you ask me, it's wellworth filing away until winter.

And it does have to do with a vitamin we strongly associate with the summer. Ibet you've already guessed what it is, haven't you?

That's right--it's that good old e-Tips favorite, vitamin D. New research inthe Journal of Leukocyte Biology shows that vitamin D is more than just the"sunshine vitamin." (Of course, any e-Tips reader could have toldthem that.)

They found that insufficient levels of vitamin D actually weaken the immunedefenses that protect us against infections and autoimmune diseases. Our levelsof vitamin D naturally decrease during fall and winter, when we're not spendingas much time in the sun. This could help explain why we're all more likely toget viral infections during those colder months.

The study suggests that ramping up your vitamin D intake could make your bodybetter prepared to fight off those infections. The researchers concluded thatvitamin D supplements should be considered helpful when conventional therapiesare not enough.

But why wait until conventional therapies fail? The evidence is clear--gettingenough vitamin D is crucial to your continued health. And it looks like that'sespecially true in the winter, when vitamin D could very well keep youcold-free throughout the season.

They might have been cautious about their recommendations, but the findingabout vitamin D was encouraging enough that the editor of the journal called it"a really exciting discovery."

Spend some time soaking up the sun this summer, and once the sun starts to hideagain, be sure to get plenty of supplemental vitamin D to boost your immunesystem and keep those nasty viruses at bay!
