Aloe vera benefits teeth and gums too

Some use aloe vera to ease the pain on sunburn while others apply it to small abrasions or minor burns for skin pain and irritation relief.

Now, new research shows that aloe vera can also help keep teeth and gums healthy.

According to the most recent Academy of General Dentistry’s Journal, General Dentistry, aloe vera in a tooth gel form may help prevent cavities and promote gum health by helping eradicate disease-causing bacteria from the mouth.

Certain anthraquinones in the plant prevent inflammation, therefore helping to keep gums healthy. Aloe vera is less likely to irritate those with sensitive teeth and gums.

Dr Dilip George who co-authored this study suggested that users research aloe-containing products to find out which ones are produced to best maintain the plant’s nutrients. Overheating the aloe, for example "destroys or reduces the effects of certain essential compounds, such as enzymes and polysaccharides," he says.

The American Dental Association recommends that each person brush his or her teeth twice a day to maintain good oral health. Individuals should also floss regularly and use a toothpaste with fluoride if possible.
