Common medication causes lifelong liver damage

03.19.19 09:01 PM

Unknown to the public, almost all symptoms of acid indigestion are not an indication of too much acid. They are a sure sign*that there is not enough stomach acid.

Low stomach acid plagues everyone today, but especially seniors from the mid-50s and up.

The symptoms you have that you assume are signs of too much stomach acid are signs that your stomach acid is too low and that food is putrefying in your stomach and creating organic acids of fermentation, causing the symptoms of heartburn.

Of course this false alarm causes people to buy and consume all sorts of pharmaceutical “antacids.”

But long-term use of one type, the proton pump inhibitor (PPI), has been linked to chronic liver issues and a fatty liver.

PPIs, which include brand names like Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid, are among the most commonly prescribed medications in the world. Approximately 10 percent of the general population take a PPI drug to relieve symptoms of heartburn, acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease.

These prescriptions are made to lower the amount of acid in your stomach, but by doing this, they also alter specific gut bacteria in a way that promotes liver injury and the progression of both liver and kidney issues.

I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to trade mild stomach pain and discomfort for that.

What can you do about it?

There are non-PPI alternatives to improve your reflux symptoms.

Natural options include probiotics to improve your gut flora, ancient aloe to support your colon and improve digestion and apple cider vinegar.

You can also try ginger root tea, which has been shown to suppress harmful stomach bacteria.

To make it, just add two or three slices of fresh ginger root to two cups of hot water and allow to steep for 30 minutes. It’s best to drink the tea about 20 minutes before meals.

If you choose to take a PPI prescription, be sure to take steps to protect your liver from injury by taking the following supplements:

• N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) — NAC is an amino acid powerhouse that helps to detoxify your liver to provide protection.

• Milk thistle — Another liver detoxifier, milk thistle is especially important for ridding your body of medication residue.

• Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) — ALA is a valuable antioxidant that helps keep fats from accumulating in your liver so that it can function optimally.

• Schisandra — An ancient Chinese herb, schisandra activates enzymes in your liver cells that produce glutathione — the master antioxidant that detoxifies your body and helps protect against free radicals

You can find all four of these powerful ingredients in Peak Liver Support.
