First-Time Jobless Claims Up By 6,000

WASHINGTON (UPI) — First-time jobless claims rose by 6,000 in the week ended Saturday, the U.S. Labor Department said.

Initial claims for unemployment benefits rose to 386,000 from the previous week’s revised estimate of 380,000.

The four-week rolling average, which gives a steadier indication of the direction of jobless claims rose by 3,500 to 382,000.

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ended June 2 were in Oregon (up by 975), Virginia (up by 838) and New Mexico (up by 531). The largest decreases were in California (down by 4,168), North Carolina (down by 2,683) and Texas (down by 1,854).

The U.S. unemployment rate is 8.2 percent, having risen 0.1 of a percentage point from April to May.
