Florida: Increased demand for Right-to-Carry permits prompts new offices

Posted: 09.19.12 04:00 PM

With a training certificate in hand, Adam Godfrey was one step closer on Sunday to receiving his Florida concealed weapons permit.Aside from the training, a $112 application fee and a background free of criminal convictions, the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will not stand in Godfrey's way."Once you go through the safety stuff it's pretty much going in there and getting everything done," Godfrey said, adding he expected his permit to be issued in about two weeks. "I heard it's pretty painless."The same could not be said in 2008 when the state Division of Licensing within the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services was deluged by a 60 percent increase in concealed weapons applications compared to 2004. The division's mail in system left its 139 employees surrounded by mountains of applications pushing wait times beyond the law mandated limit of three months
