Protect Hearing And Cognition With Grapes, Wine

03.10.13 09:01 PM

Drinking too much wine has obvious negative impacts on cognition, but a new study shows that moderate wine intake could help protect against hearing and cognitive decline in the long term.

Researchers at Ford Hospital have discovered that resveratrol, a substance found in grapes and red wine, has the potential to counteract harmful inflammation in the body that can lead to noise-induced hearing loss and age-related mental decline.

“Our latest study focuses on resveratrol and its effect on bioinflammation, the body’s response to injury and something that is believed to be the cause of many health problems including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, aging and hearing loss,” said Michael D. Seidman, from the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital. “Resveratrol is a very powerful chemical that seems to protect against the body’s inflammatory process as it relates to aging, cognition and hearing loss.”

About one in five Americans suffer from hearing loss, as hearing steadily declines with age for most people. But noise-induced hearing loss is also on the rise. In fact, more than 12 percent of American service members returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan suffer significant hearing loss.

While more research is needed on resveratrol, the researchers say that there are definite benefits to having more in your diet.
