How To Keep TSA From Molesting Wounded Veterans

03.31.13 09:01 PM

Last week, the government took steps to avoid harassment of wounded military veterans by agents of the Transportation Security Administration. The move came two weeks after an active duty Marine who had lost both of legs to an improvised explosive device was humiliated at a TSA checkpoint at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The TSA, while still disputing claims that the 25-year-old wounded Marine was unduly harassed, has taken steps to expedite the airport screening process for active duty and inactive wounded military veterans. New protocol will allow wounded vets to call or email the TSA in advance of their trips to get benefits similar to those in the TSA’s PreCheck program.

Wounded veterans who call in advance will be allowed to use dedicated screening lanes; leave on light outerwear, belts, shoes and hats; and keep laptop computers and certain liquids in carry-on bags.

TSA said in a statement: “TSA wants to facilitate the screening of injured and wounded service members. To address these specific situations, TSA has established the Wounded Warrior/Military Severely Injured Joint Support Operations Center Program to support and facilitate the movement of severely injured service members and veterans through the security screening process at our nation’s airports.”

For more information about how to use the program, visit the TSA website.
