House Democrats Propose Mandatory Liability Insurance For Gun Ownership

A group of Congressional Democrats has come up with yet another outlandish gun control proposal: requiring all gun owners to carry mandatory liability insurance.

Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) presented the “Firearm Risk Protection Act” last month with the support of eight Democratic cohorts; she lauded the legislation as “the first bill to require liability insurance of gun buyers nationwide.”

If the bill were passed, potential gun owners would be required to obtain “a qualified liability insurance policy” before purchasing a firearm.

“For too long, gun victims and society at large have borne the brunt of the costs of gun violence,” Maloney said as she introduced the legislation. “My bill would change that by shifting some of that cost back onto those who own the weapons.”

Under the law, firearm owners without liability insurance would be subject to fines up to $10,000.

NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action director Chris Cox told The Daily Caller that the proposed legislation is “ridiculous on its face, as it presumes law-abiding gun owners are guilty for merely exercising a fundamental, constitutional right.”

The bill is not expected to get much traction.
