It almost smells like sabotage. Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, has announced he plans to introduce an amendment to a sweeping immigration reform bill that would allow gay U.S. citizens to sponsor their foreign-born partners in order to obtain green cards.
That’s something heterosexual couples already are able to do, and Leahy and other Democrats are feeling pressure from gay rights groups to make sure the new language makes it into the final draft of the bill.
But RINOs can swerve course on only one social issue at a time without alienating their base, and combining gay rights with immigration reform is too much: Gang of Eight Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) told
POLITICO Tuesday that adding the gay green card amendment “will virtually guarantee that [immigration reform] won’t pass.”
