Science Professors Advocating Book Burning Demonstrate Why Academia Has Long Been Scr

05.07.13 09:01 PM

In the United States, a country where freedom of speech is paramount, burning books that espouse views opposite one’s own is generally frowned upon. But a couple of academics at San Jose State University apparently didn’t get the memo.

Here is a quick rundown of a few of history’s most notable book burners:

There are hundreds of other examples of people too insecure with the arguments behind their beliefs about the who, what, when, where, why and how of the world to stomach having them challenged in print. Some of them are simply busybodies or lovers of censorship, and others feel celestially ordained to protect the innocence of their contemporaries.

San Jose State University’s Alison Bridger, chairwoman of the meteorology department, and Assistant Professor Craig Clements can add their names to the book-burning ranks, after suggesting that any book disagreeing with their views on climate change ought to be burned.

Global warming and climate change blog “What’s Up With That?” discovered a photo of the two posted on the university’s website holding a lit match under a copy of the book The Mad, Mad, Mad World of Climatism, donated to the school by the Heartland Institute. While there is no reason to believe the two actually did burn any of the books, the photo and accompanying caption (which have since been removed) say a great deal to the unwillingness of global warming sycophants to be challenged and forced to defend their hypotheses.

Here’s what appeared on the SJSU webpage:

The caption reads:
This week we received a deluge of free books from the Heartland Institute {this or this }. The book is entitled “The Mad, Mad, Made World of Climatism”. SHown above, Drs. Bridger and Clements test the flammability of the book.

The Chicago-based Heartland Institute, to be fair, has long been vilified by people on the left for its pro-free market research efforts, which often result in the publication of material with a decidedly anti-regulation bent. But that doesn’t negate the fact that Heartland puts much of the material it disseminates through a peer-review process that involves about 235 academics and professional economists.

Heartland touts The Mad, Mad, Mad World of Climatism written by Steve Goreham, as a book including “not just opinions” but facts “based on the work of hundreds of scientists across the world who challenge the theory of man-made global warming.”

Joseph Bast, president of The Heartland Institute, said of the book: “Making sure books like this one get the attention they deserve is only one of a dozen educational projects on global warming we have underway. We’re winning the public debate because we trust people to understand the real science and see past the hype, and we reach enough opinion leaders to make a difference. The Mad, Mad, Mad World of Climatism is a great primer for experts and novices alike.”

Scientific academics like Bridger and Clements make it clear that they refuse to even consider viewpoints that differ from their own with regard to man-made global warming. The attitude is ironically similar, some might suggest, to the view many of the world’s religious people take toward scientific theories heretical to their own faith-based beliefs.
