The Department of Education announced Thursday that, in a move to be more accepting to unique family structures, it will remove language from financial aid applications that uses gender-specific language to identify dependent students’ parents.
Instead of asking for income information for cohabitant fathers and mothers, the Education Department will begin asking for the financial information for “Parent 1” and “Parent 2.”
“All students should be able to apply for federal student aid within a system that incorporates their unique family dynamics,” Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a statement. “These changes will allow us to more precisely calculate federal student aid eligibility based on what a student’s whole family is able to contribute and ensure taxpayer dollars are better targeted toward those students who have the most need, as well as provide an inclusive form that reflects the diversity of American families.”
Of course, if we’re going to split hairs over political correctness, should we worry about the value of the numerals? Is “1” lesser than “2”? Is “2” better than “1” because it denotes a higher value?
