Chicago Man Sues City For Allowing Wine Shop In ‘Dry’ Area

07.11.13 09:28 AM

CHICAGO,* (UPI) –* A Chicago lawyer says he is suing the city for allowing a wine store to open in a neighborhood where people voted 31 years ago to ban alcohol.

Jeffrey Jarmuth says in the federal lawsuit people in the area voted in a 1982 local option election to go “dry without exceptions” in an area that includes the building where Don Sritong signed a lease a year ago and plans to open Just Grapes next month, Crain’s Chicago Business reported Wednesday.

Sritong said he has jumped through lots of hoops to get the shop ready, and it has not been “fun, or easy on the pocketbook, for a small mom-and-pop business like mine.”

“I’m anxious to finally open for business in a neighborhood that I feel wants a fine wine shop,” he said.

Jarmuth says previous attempts to sell alcohol in the area have failed, as have efforts to change the area from “dry” to “wet” status.
